| A scientist has warned that wood fires could be deadly (Alamy) |
Stress reduces your ability to metabolize and detoxify. Studies have shown that the activity of hundreds of genes responsible for enzymes that break down fats and detoxify prescription drugs, are negatively impacted by stress. Stress can also increase your toxin burden by increasing your desire for high fat and high sugar foods.
Research by Professor Steffen Loft shows that wood smoke specks can be deadly because they reach the deepest parts of the lungs if inhaled.
A link has been established between tiny particles from car exhausts and coal-powered fire stations and heart disease, asthma and cancer – and Professor Loft warns that wood smoke can be just as dangerous.
He says: ‘The particles that come from wood smoke can certainly cause fatal heart or lung disease,” he said. “In human cells that were exposed to the particles, substantial DNA damage and mutation took place. It was comparable to the effects of particles given off by traffic.
‘The full scale of the health risk is not currently known, but especially in developing countries where many people have wood fires inside their home for cooking and heat it is a major cause of disease.’
